EDITORIAL: Kudos to DCCCD
Issue date: 9/5/08 Section: The Roundtable
In an article on May 20, The Et Cetera reported that, thanks to the Bush administration, colleges across the nation were facing a 63 percent loss in funding from the Perkins Grant. For the DCCCD this amounts to $1.7 million.
The Perkins Grant directs money to secondary and post-secondary educational institutions so they can provide individuals with the academic and technical skills needed to succeed in a knowledge-and-skills-based economy.
This money helps provide educational opportunities for our future teachers, nurses and law enforcement officers among others.
Eastfield uses this money to finance equipment and supplies for technical programs. With about $1.7 million less, the money for these funds comes out of the school's pocket. This grant also funds some of the positions in Career Services which resulted in at least one position being cut.
However the DCCCD is not taking this lying down. DCCCD Chancellor Wright Lassiter is in talks with the Texas Association of Community Colleges and the Texas Education Agency to try and reverse the decision. We have to give them a big thumbs up for actively pursuing their money. Not only is it taking a stand to keep these programs actively funded, but it is responding quickly, as well.
The monies that the grant provides are much needed at Eastfield, and for many colleges throughout the nation.
And knowing this, the district is not just counting on Plan A to fix everything; the district is already looking into the possibility of bringing it to the Texas Legislature. So they have a backup plan in mind. Putting this much forethought makes us think the DCCCD will succeed.
So we want to give a big kudos to the higher-ups, because they really do seem to be looking out for us.
