This morning SPAR sponsored an ice cream social in The Pit where various types of ice cream were offered to any student who needed a break from the Texas heat.

Some who attended used the social as a way to pass the time in between classes, while others simply seized the opportunity for free ice cream.

"I came for the free ice cream," said biology major Chris Hatton. "I just ran a mile in my PE class and needed to cool off."

SPAR holds various events for students throughout the year, and offers popcorn in The Pit on Fridays. Program Specialist Janet Foreman helped hand out the ice cream.

"We thought it was a fun summer idea, and everyone loves ice cream," she said.

Foreman said that all of the 450 bars had been handed out within the first 30 minutes.

Students were not the only ones taking advantage of the chance to cool down. Amanda Nguyen in Human Resources had a frozen Butterfinger bar and said that the social was terrific.

"I go to as many SPAR events as I can, whenever I'm free," she said.

According to Donnine Ballance, director of SPAR, there were definitely favorite in ice cream flavors.

"We noticed that the Drumsticks and Butterfinger bars were disappearing a lot faster than some of the others," she said.

Undecided major, Fabiola Hernandez said she appreciated the accessibility of the free ice cream.

"I was expecting their to be a long line, but their really wasn't any," she said. "I liked that."

SPAR will be holding a Welcome Back Party to celebrate the beginning of the fall semester in the Lower Courtyard on September 4.
