Eastfield hosted a seminar titled "101 Ways to Prepare for Final Exams Now" in C-135 on Thursday, March 20, to help students struggling with test-taking skills.

The presenter for this event was Learning Assistance Center director Theresa Sternat.

Sternat related a study she read demonstrating the importance of test-taking skills.

The study was done on inner-city black youths versus suburban white children, trying to prove whether or not tests were racially biased. They found that the problem had more to do with the lack of test-taking skills taught to the inner city blacks, rather than the information presented in the test being biased.

The five main points, which are of the seminar were to keep your goals in mind, study in an organized manner--which discusses study habits--study skills and the differences between them, new ways to study, test wise and a good attitude.

"It's everything students should know about how to study and how to prepare, not just for finals," said SPAR Program Specialist, Judy Schwartz. "It's just good basic overall study tips and how to approach your material."

According to Sternat, it is important for students to have a realistic goal in mind. She related a story about a friend who, because of different things that were going on in her life, could not find the time to do a project for a class. She told herself, "I'm going to go for a B in this class." Without turning in the project she couldn't find the time to do, an A was no longer a realistic goal. This story shows the correct course of action since it would add unnecessary stress to reach for that unattainable A.

Some of the program coordinators for TRIO went to the event so they could pass along the information to students in their program.

"The most important thing students got from the program was the importance of getting organized and studying for finals in advance," said Trio program coordinator, Jamie Coley.

According to SPAR there were fewer students than had been anticipated at the event but the event itself was an overall success.

"There weren't a lot of students there, but those that came were glad they did," said Schwartz. "The students that participated learned from the seminar, enjoyed it and got something out of it."

With the busy lives Eastfield students lead, staffers said they have had a hard time finding days and times that will be best for students to attend events like this one.

"A lot of students don't have the time to sit down and learn to study but this is one of those programs that is really worth it," Coley said

Students who missed the presentation can find the handouts listing the 101 test-taking tips in the LAC.
