She is outgoing yet laid- back, fearless yet feisty. With her great confidence and extraordinary swagger she is the perfect person to fit the heels of the new Associate Dean of Arts Language, and Literature, Courtney Carter.
“She’s fantastic and makes me happy because she’s smart, funny, and knows how to get stuff done,” Executive Dean of Arts, Language, and Literature Rachel Wolf said. “Courtney is reliable and easy to work with, she’s up for about any job, and she’ll follow through to make sure things get done.”
Wolf said Carter genuinely cares about student success, not just academically, but also personally.
“I think she's very student centered. She will help students figure themselves out. She'll give them guidance through wise administrative decision-making, coupled with her genuine care and concern for student success-and not just at Eastfield, but in their lives,” Wolf said.
Carter’s goals in this position are student success bridging the gap between students and administration and programs.
“I want to assist in the development and enhancement of programs offered in the division, and also serve as an advocate for faculty and students to address their needs,” Carter said. “In this role, I am able to see the big picture and am able to see how, what is happening in the classroom connects to what is happening outside of the classroom.”
Carter wants students to know even though she has moved up the ladder of success she still has a love for teaching and will be teaching one class this semester.
“I want each student to have meaningful learning experiences in and outside of the class room,” Carter said. “I value the conversation with students, and I also have opportunities to assist in the training of adjunct and full time faculty to ensure that student instructors are effective and can contribute to their success,” Carter said.
Carter will be working closely with programs such foreign languages, The Et Cetera Newspaper, the dance department, and the drama department.
Carter has inspired many students to step out of their shadow and blossom.
“Her creativity and belief in me inspires to stop cowering in the shadows,” psychology major Kivaun Parraway said. “Her attitude alone lifts others to more positive moods; I really look up to her because she’s fearless, and somehow part of me is intimidated. She’s had great confidence in me even when I’ve doubted myself and been fearful of making mistakes.
Carter’s teaching style also helps student grow academically.
“She’s very patient and easy to talk to, she doesn’t dump too much on her students, and what she expects of her students is just enough to push them out of their comfort zone to succeed without being demanding,” Parraway said.
Student Government vice president Brandon Averhart says Carter has inspired him to be more passionate about the dedication he puts into his own work and goals. “She offers students help in areas of self-confidence and self-assurance,” Averhart said.
Averhart also said he knows Carter will take the students to new heights and excel in her responsibilities as the new associate dean.
Hotel administration Major Evan Carter seems to agrees. “I believe that Courtney Carter has inspired me to volunteer for more leadership roles. While in her class, I learned many valuable skills that will be very useful in a corporate setting,.”
Evan Carter also credits her teaching style getting students involved and interacting with other students.
“Courtney Carter’s teaching styles are some of the best I have seen. She always makes the lesson fun to learn by getting us involved and interacting with other students,” Evan Carter said.
“Courtney Carter is an amazingly gifted professor,” Evan Carter said. “She is very approachable if you have questions. She makes it easy to get up and perform speeches in front of her.”
Other than Oprah Winfey, whom Courtney Carter mentioned jokingly, she credits successful administrators across the district whom she had the opportunity to work with, and who influenced and encouraged her to enter into an administrative role.
When Courtney Carter takes off the hat of associated dean. She has many hobbies to engage in on her weekends. “I like to cook, go to concerts and other live music venues, and hang out with family and friends.”
Courtney Carter graduated from the University of North Texas with her bachelors and masters degree in communication studies.
Wolf finds Carter’s youth and energy essential for her division.
“I think we have a fairly young leadership team in the AL&L division,” Wolf said. “That may be a source of concern in some cases, but I think Courtney brings great wisdom and knowledge of people and processes to her administrative position. The youth and energy she brings to our division will serve us well for a long time, and I think that's the kind of stability we need in our division and at Eastfield.”
