After the abomination known as New Moon hit theaters less than a year ago, its sequel continues to thrive off the hype of the critically acclaimed book series. And it continues to siphon more money from the public while laughing all the way to the bank, leaving me wondering why people pay to see these abysmal films.
The story begins with, for those who are unaware of the series, heroine Bella Swan, played by Kristen Stewart, graduating from high school. At the end of New Moon she made her decision about wanting to be turned into a vampire. Even her vampire boyfriend Edward, played by Robert Pattinson, was hesitant about this because it meant she would lose her soul. This is about the aftereffects of that decision, bringing back characters like Victoria, played by Bryce Dallas Howard, who is on a mission to kill Bella; werewolf Jacob Black, played by Taylor Lautner, who is still hanging onto the coattails of the "desirable" Bella, even though she loves Edward more than him; and brothers Jasper and Emmet Cullen, played by Kellan Lutz and Jackson Rathbone, who killed Victoria's love in the first Twilight film.
Well, let me get the one good thing about this out of the way before I rip into this catastrophe. The fight scenes in the very last portions were tolerable. By no means were they good or comparable to fight scenes of other fantasy epics, but seeing the Hollister- and Abercrombie and Fitch-wearing vampires getting ripped to shreds is a sight to behold.
Now for the negative. I know people will say, "Oh the reason you do not like this film is because you didn't read the book, wah wah wah." Well, not only have I read all of the books, I even went as far as picking up the recent Eclipse novella called The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner, which is about the timid newborn vampire in this movie, played by Jodelle Ferland. So, I am up to date on the Twilight craze. And even after reading all of the books and watching all the films up until this one, I still don't see what is so special about Bella.
It seems like Bella has only two emotions, blank or almost happy. Do not expect to see any more than a smirk on this girl's face during the movie. One would think that having a vampire and a werewolf fighting over her would be the most awesome thing ever. However, Bella's lack of emotion makes it seem as if this kind of stuff happens all the time, and now she's jaded.
Also, the girl is playing both of the guys, which I am sure if a guy did this, girls would hate him. Not to mention, the two guys pining over her are two of the most annoying people I have ever seen. Edward, the asexual who is more into staring at Bella than he is doing anything else, is less dreamy and more of a suspected rapist. Jacob, on the other hand, is a complete child. The only way he deals with the notion that Bella wants Edward more than him is by acting like he wants to kill himself. Better yet, there is a part in the movie where he forces himself onto her. Real classy.
The character Jasper seemed like he was the only one in the film who tried. What a shame that an almost good actor went to waste, while the well-known actors gave so little. Jasper even had his own back story, but considering that it was muddled in the filth known as the rest of the film, it was a waste of a good scene.
Eclipse is one of the worst films I have seen this year. This is not just another movie review, this is a public service announcement. Do not support bad filmmaking by paying to see this. Do not allow these amateur filmmakers to thrive on the stupidity of consumerism. However, if curiosity gets the best of you, buy a ticket for another movie, then sneak into this one.
Eclipse gets an aggressive one out of five. I would have given it less if I could.
