A King with no rings

LeBron

Lebron James disappointed and angered local residents after an hour-long ESPN special last week after announcing he would be leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers to join the Miami Heat .

Now that all calls, e-mails, press conferences and closed-door deals are finally over, the biggest free-agency signing in NBA history has came to light. As a result, a new NBA superteam has been formed.

There were many superstars up for grabs this year. LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Amar'e Stoudemire, Dirk Nowitzki, Chris Bosh, Chris Paul and Derek Fisher are some of the big names this free agency season.

However, one name stood out among the rest. James, the two-time NBA MVP and the game's most celebrated star, said at the end of the season that he and his associates would cause chaos in the front offices of many NBA teams. He didn't disappoint.

James has received more press over this issue than any player in the history of the game. Over 10.8 million viewers tuned to watch the The Decision, as James announced his new team on ESPN. The New York Knicks, Chicago Bulls, Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers contacted James, all hoping to get their chance at history in signing a player of this caliber.

When it was all said and done, James chose to join the Miami Heat with fellow superstars Wade and Bosh to form a superteam. This was the worst decision of James' career.

I believe James was in the best situation possible in Cleveland. Coming off two 60-win regular seasons and two consecutive MVP awards, James was at the turning point of his career. He had proven that he could get his team to the Finals and contend for a championship year after year.

There was absolutely no reason for James to join the Heat. He was in a town that loved him, had a team that was competitive, posted the best record in the league for two consecutive seasons and made it to at least the second round of the playoffs the past five seasons.

He single-handedly turned this once-terrible franchise into a winning force around the league. James should have stayed and tried to win a championship with him being the key player leading the charge. Great teams are usually made up of one superstar and good role players. Now that he has joined the Heat, James will not be the leader of his team, but rather a role player. Wade, a former NBA champion, will be the leader of the pack.

For James, winning a championship is now more crucial than ever. This new superteam is expected to win it all. If this team doesn't accomplish that goal, it will be one of the biggest disappointments in NBA history.

The King has turned his back on the city he built. He didn't consult with Cleveland's front office before making his decision to leave, according to ESPN.com. This was very disrespectful to the Cleveland organization and to the many fans. The media has criticized him, and Cavalier owner Dan Gilbert accused James of quitting.   NBA Commissioner David Stern later fined Gilbert $100,000 for his open letter to fans about James.

In this league, success is measured in championships and James hasn't gotten it done when it counts. With this change of heart, James may be no closer to winning a ring than he was in Cleveland. In fact, he may be further away from it. Joining a team with two or more superstars doesn't guarantee anything but higher expectations.
