Seven of Eastfield's art students have been chosen to participate in the League of Innovation Exhibition at Mountain View's art gallery. Their work will be displayed from Feb. 12 - March 2.
Fine arts faculty members, who review student's portfolios, pick the art they wish to send to the exhibition from among their students.
Students Bada Bell, Andrew Britt, Wade Colwill, Pamela Flores, Esther Hasskamp, Susan Temple and Mary Wester were the lucky seven chosen to showcase their artwork.
Each college can choose 10 students to represent them, but the college must also submit 10 pieces of work distributed amongst the students the college has entered.
A juror will then judge the submitted art and five pieces will be selected to move on to a national level.
"[The] Jurors are professionals with experience in some combination of contemporary art history, studio art, and gallery direction," Kathy Windrow, art department chair said.
The Juror this year is Marty Walker, owner of the Marty Walker art gallery in Downtown Dallas. The professors enjoy seeing their student's works on display.
James Behan, professor of art at Mountain View College, said he likes a piece of work submitted by a Brookhaven student.
" 'Live! Nudes!' is my favorite piece of work submitted," he said. "It has great abstract, color and it's an over all dynamic image."
Funding for this program is through The John Cowan Memorial Fund, which helps purchase student art that is circulated on through each of the seven campuses.
"Mountain View College has a fund for purchasing art work by DCCCD students for the MVC permanent collection, and they select several works every year," Windrow said. "That fund was supported by those of us art faculty who were friends and associates of John Cowan."
One of the winners chosen to participate, Pamela Flores, said she was surprised to be chosen. "But I am glad it did, the piece has a great deal of meaning to me," she said. "I
suppose because it is one of the pieces of art done by Eastfield's students
that represents innovation at Eastfield College." Eastfield has been a part of the exhibition for decades and continues to inspire students like Flores to continue in arts.
