Recent SPAR events such as the club fair and SPAR-tona 500 have big smash hits, with high turnouts and many happy faces.
It%s because not only has SPAR seemed to become more creative with each new event, but also because of a higher zeal for participation on the part of Eastfield students.
Kudos to SPAR for organizing such a great set of events and the rest of the calendar looks promising. Hopefully they keep in mind some of the key things that made their events such a success.
SPAR-tona 500 had a live band, free hot dogs, free drinks, an airbrush-your-own T-shirt stand, a blow-up Twister game and a miniature racetrack. The lines were huge because students enjoyed the attractions so much.
Hot dogs are one of the common loves of many students. Movie-less movie night last semester offered the same type of hot dogs and it too was a hit, especially for an evening event.
But hot dogs aren%t the only food that can bring together students " sometimes creativity goes a long way.
The mashed potato bar last Thursday was unique and creative with its food: mashed potatoes and all the fixings. Free food is great when its creative and from a quality restaurant or caterer.
And live entertainment raises the quality of an entire event tenfold. Being able to pause to eat and enjoy the outdoors as your watch a talented band playing classic rock hits is much better than absently listening to background music from a machine.
Cool things like the blow-up Twister game and the race car contests were great examples of thinking outside the box and they gave students a chance to unwind from studying and class and actively participate in a fun event.
We need more things like those events to raise school spirit. You never see lines on campus to get into a basketball game or to buy school T-shirts, but the lines at SPAR-tona 500 and the club fair were huge.
SPAR has done a great job with their events and students have responded. If the rest of the college can follow their example we%ll have spirit bursting out the doors and we%ll make students even more proud to come to college each day, looking forward to what the day could bring.
